Careless guy wastes energy by leaving the window open and the AC on during a heatwave, his roommate tricks him into thinking he broke it: ‘No power connection, no AirCon’

No more AirCon for you...

I had a roommate who was a good guy but very careless. We shared utilities 50/50 so costs were shared. He had an in-window air conditioner and we lived in Southern California so it's often blazing hot.
Several times I came home to find him gone, bedroom door open, and air conditioner blazing. I would just go in and turn it off - no big deal. But then a few times I'd look in and
he has the other windows open - and the air conditioner doing its best to cool the whole L.A. area... And I'm paying for it. I mentioned it a few times (WHY even run AC when a window is open?!) but he never stopped.
Well... I took out the power plug in the wall, and put clear Scotch tape around one of the prongs, then plugged it back in. No power connection - no AirCon. But it looks normal.

Later on, he came back and his AC is "de d". I said "oh, did you leave it running with the windows open again?" He had a lamp in the
other socket so he knew there was power, he just couldn't use the AC anymore. Sorry... Later when he moved it cleared the tape out of the outlet. Good as new.

unus-suprus-septum Had a roommate who would run the AC with the window open. When I confronted him, he told me, like I was some kind of idiot, "it doesn't cost more to run the AC with the window open" Which is technically true for any given moment in time, it just runs longer.
tetheredvoid Moved in with my parents and constantly followed them around turning off lights and closing doors (drafty house). A month in my stepdad says I've saved them hundreds already from when his adult children lived with them. lol
His kids would run their television, separate gaming set up, a karaoke machine, the heat, and open a window. $600/month for electricity. No thanks. lol

Catbutt247365 My own son started sleeping with his window open before he left for college. We have AC! My dad would have said I ain't paying to air condition the whole neighborhood!
Imaginary_Lock1938 I'd take out a fuse from the socket (UK) or disconnect something internally. Tape is too easy to notice and surprised it worked, I guess I learned today that in a pinch I can save on electrical tape
Rough Direction8875 I can understand running the AC when you're not home just to keep it from turning into an oven while you're gone, but leaving the windows open too? That kinda defeats the purpose of the AC.
DescriptionSea6842 Glad you got rid of the problem!! Let's see how long he can do this living and sharing utilities with someone else. What an idiot!!
NamasteNoodle They actually have these little plastic devices that you can put through the holes on an electrical cord prongs and then put a tiny little lock on it. I had to do that when my teenagers would try to use the computer without permission or when they were on restriction. They are pretty inexpensive and easy to find.
barb_20 he's not that smart? extension cord and plug in at the other side. I would have definitely tried it
